International NEXT Facade Summit:
Spotlight on outstanding architectural projects

Integrated planning for sustainable buildings, innovative façade concepts and the realisation of ambitious designs: these themes were at the heart of the 9th International NEXT Facade Summit, held on 20 October 2026 at NEXT Studio in Frankfurt. At this English-language hybrid event, four renowned experts from internationally active architectural and engineering firms presented outstanding projects from Europe, China and the USA, and discussed design possibilities, technical challenges and practical experience from the construction industry.

Sustainability begins with collaboration

To kick off the specialist event, moderated by Max Radt (VP Business Development at Hydro Building Systems), Lara Katscher, a member of the Executive Board at Werner Sobek AG, explained the importance of interdisciplinary planning processes for sustainable buildings. Her approach: design, structural and building physics requirements must be integrated at an early stage in order to develop holistically convincing solutions. Lara Katscher demonstrated how this works in practice, using, amongst other examples, the new headquarters of the Novo Nordisk Foundation near Copenhagen. The terraced building features a highly insulated timber-frame façade with generous glazing and wraparound verandas.

When the façade follows the design concept

Saša Begović, Senior Partner and co-founder of 3LHD in Zagreb, then emphasised the importance of a clear spatial concept for architectural design. He regards the façade as an integral part of an overall concept that emerges from the interplay between architecture, use and the surrounding environment. The architect illustrated this, amongst other things, using two remarkable hotel projects on the Croatian Adriatic coast: at the Grand Park Hotel in Rovinj, the terraced building follows the topography and opens out towards the historic old town and the sea with landscaped outdoor areas and extensively glazed façades. At the Hotel Argentina in Dubrovnik, too, the relationship with the landscape determines the architectural design. Here, 3LHD combines the historic building fabric with a new structure, whose generously glazed façade in the reception area frames the view of the Adriatic Sea.

Ambitious architecture in China: between joy and frustration

Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Michael Schumacher, co-founder and managing director of schneider + schumacher in Frankfurt, shed light on the opportunities and challenges of architectural projects in China in a talk entitled ‘Joy and Frustration in China’. He illustrated how design ideas can reach their limits using the example of the Qianhai Telecommunication Centre in Shenzhen: the originally planned façade, featuring movable elements intended to represent the mathematical constant pi in binary form, was rejected as the project progressed and was not implemented. The architect then presented the Hetao Innovation Centre near Hong Kong, a project in which the guiding architectural concept was consistently realised. Here, flexibly usable research buildings are connected via bridges and roof terraces to form an ensemble whose staggered, glass-clad structures and open architecture establish a connection with the adjacent river landscape.

Where architecture and landscape merge

The closing presentation was given by Maura Ambrosiano, Technical Design Leader at Heatherwick Studio in London. Her talk centred on the question of how the boundaries between façade, structural framework, building and landscape can be dissolved. An impressive example of this is the Little Island project on the Hudson River in New York. The public park rests on distinctive, chalice-shaped concrete elements, which also shape the park’s undulating landscape. These were realised on the basis of intensive modelling studies, prototypes and structural optimisations. Another highlight: the Xi’an Centre Culture Business District (CCBD) in China, with its approximately 57-metre-high ‘Tree of Life’, a green structure in the shape of a tree. The elaborately developed façade cladding, comprising glazed ceramic elements, defines the appearance of the building complex with its varied forms and surfaces.

Professional exchange on-site

Following the four presentations, participants at the NEXT Studio had the opportunity to discuss the topics with the speakers and exchange views with fellow professionals from the fields of architecture and planning in a relaxed atmosphere.
